What is a township?
The term township usually refers to the often underdeveloped urban living areas that, from the late 19th century until the end of apartheid, were reserved for non-white residents, namely Indians and black people (Africans and "Coloureds"). Townships were usually built on the periphery of towns and cities.
What is an informal settlement?
There is no formal definition, however the following definition is used: an informal settlement comprises “an impoverished group of households who have illegally or without authority taken occupation of a parcel of land (with the land owned by the Council in the majority of cases) and who have created a shanty town of impoverished illegal residential structures built mostly from scrap material without provision made for essential services and which may or may not have a layout that is more or less formal in nature.
What is a township tour?
As the name implies, a township tour is a guided tour of a township that provides you with an close-up view of how the township residents really live. With our tours you are not just a tourist but you can make a difference to help us with distributing breakfast to the schoolkids on their way to school. People who already joined us say they have never seen anything quite like it and remember the experience for years.
Who will conduct the tour?
All our tours are conducted by Registered and Qualified Tour Guides who either live in Capricorn or are involved as a volunteer in Capricorn. Sunrise Tours is a locally-owned business that provides opportunities and employment to people in the township and we aim to show our guests not only the challenges but many of the exciting developments that are taking place in Capricorn.
How long will it take?
We offer a range of tour options – the most popular is our full day tour where we mix an approximately 2-hour walking tour with helping to distribute breakfast. The afternoon can be spend to your own choice; you can join us for our afternoon program in the township or spend it in any other way. The price can vary depending on your wishes.
Will we meet the locals?
Absolutely! This tour is aimed at meeting and interacting with real people in Capricorn. They are open for meeting you.
What will we see?
What you’ll see on every tour is different, but common sights include: local shops and some local houses, the different socio-economic areas within the Capricorn community and off course we can introduce you to our on Sunrise kids. Together with the Dutch organization Stichting Capricorn we provide breakfast for school kids. We will get you in contact with some of the local volunteers who live in Capricorn.
Are you able to customise the tour?
Yes, we are very flexible and are willing to customise your tour if you have special interests. Off course you can combine your township tour with other highlights.

The local people are open for meeting tourists.They both benefit and learn a lot from meeting the visitors who come to Capricorn.
Is it safe to visit a township?
We will do our utmost best to keep you safe. If there is any risk we will change the program. We are well known in the area and we stay at your side during the walking tour.
You can keep yourself safe by not bringing any valuables into the township.
What should I bring/not bring with me?
Bring an open mind. Do not bring valuables, such as big cameras. You can bring your phone or a small camera to take photos. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking.
Is it easy to reach?
Yes, Capricorn is situated along the M5, close to Muizenberg.

50% of our profit will go into our breakfast program which provides over 200 children with breakfast before they go to school .
